Final evaluation glass

Throughout the course if this project I have aimed to capture the essence of glass within photography. During this project I have learnt various techniques in photographing glass and I have explored image manipulation and darkroom processed in order to complete this project.
This project had called for research into various photographers who have photographed using film photography, photographed glass and used image manipulation within their work. When completing this research, I discovered Erik Johansson, a Swedish photographer who creates surrealist imagery with the use of photography and photoshop. Photographs by Johansson include one which looks as though a road has been cut like paper and one which looks as though a house is falling off the edge of the world. These photographs take hours for Johansson to create while using sometimes several hundred photographs to create a single image. When doing this research I found that I like Johansson's work so much that i feel he is now one of my favourite photographers/artists.
To kick off this project I completed some primary research of glass which called for me to go out and take some photographs of glass. These photographs mainly consisted of windows as I was a little unsure of how to creatively capture glass within photography and this is one of the things which I learned during this project. One of the photographs I took during this primary research was a close up shot of the glass pain in a railing. This photograph is simple as there is not much going on within the image however I feel as though this image is somewhat abstract as it is not completely clear what the image is of. I like this about this photograph as it adds a little mystery to the photography. Another photograph which I took during the primary research did not include glass, however it was a photograph of city hall with its reflection in the water of the fountain in city park. This photograph shows glass like properties as the water is reflective like a mirror so although there is no glass involved, the glass like qualities if the photograph are present. I like this photograph as it shows creativity with the lack of literal glass within the shot.
This project called for the use of film, both colour and black and white. With the black and white film, I shot still life images of a small glass elephant ornaments and also other glass items which I found while walking around bradford and the college. With these images, I was able to go into the dark room and hand print some of my images. As I was not able to enter a colour dark room, this meant j was not able to complete the same process with the photographs from my colour shoot meaning that I had to scan the negatives into photoshop and then get prints produced at ProAm in order to create at least 5 final images. For the colour film shoot, i again chose to shoot still life, but this time each photograph i took on colour film, i also took on digital, this meant that i was able to see the similarities and differences between the two shots. in my visual diary i have shown the best of my comparison shots, the image in question shows a large glass diamond ornament placed on grey carpet. The photograph is the same in each shot as i took them both only seconds apart but there are clear differences between the film shot and the digital shot for example you can see that the digital shot is a lot more crisp whereas the film shot is a lot more grainy. when taking these photographs, i tried to keep the camera setting the same on both the film camera and my digital camera however i found that i was able to get a better shot by changing the settings on my digitial camera which i couldnt do on the film camera such as changing the iso which the camera was on as this needs to remain constant when using a film camera but can be changed as you please on a film cameras. From this comparison hoot, i found that personally, i much prefer digital photography to film photography. Another advantage of digital photography is that the image which is produced is instant, this is good as you can see instantly if the image is in focus or not and you can also delete and re take images if you are not happy with them, you do not have this with film cameras.
in adition to this, i also did some research into photographic processing labs. photographic processing labs are facilities which professionally print images and provide a wide range of photographic facilites. these facilities are usually offered at competative prices and as I use these facilities on a regular basis when printing images at pro am it was relevant to look into.
As this project ran over the festive period, the christmas task consisted of a festive shoot which meant shooting a series of images using digital photography which showed a festive sort of theme while remaining under the catagory of glass, for example christmas lights and christmas tree baubles. for this shoot i choses to take a number of photographs of baubles on my christmas tree which were taken using film photography. i chose to take these photographs using film photography as i felt it would add a little variety to this task as i usually only shoot using film unless it has been otherwise specified. By shooting these images in film i was stepping a little outside of my comfort zone as this is not my preferred area of photography, however i liked the experience of mixing this shoot up a little. As well as these photographs shot in film, I also shot a series of photographs on my digital camera, this time i chose to photograph some brightly coloured fairy lights which were surrounded by tinsel. This fit into the festive and glass theme of this shoot as the lights themselves were glass and the combination of fairy lights and tinsel looks extremely festive. As christmas is one of my favourite times of the year, this was a very enjoyable shoot to complete. I enjoy everything christmassy so taking photographs which have the main purpose of showcasing christmas in all its glory was perfect for me.
During this project I also used image manipulation and experimented with the liquify tool on photoshop which i found was a lot of fun. The liquify tool sort of, melts the image so that the colours run into one and other creating a kind of liquid look to the images which have been edited. I used this technique to edit a few images and for the most part, I used it in order to distort the image completely and in a random fashion. With these photographs i did not have much of an idea of what the end product would be, i was just experimenting with the tool to see what it could do and how it would effect different images using varying colours. This said however, one of the images which i edited using this method showed a reflection so for this one, i chose to use the liquify tool on the top portion of the photograph, the part which was not reflected and as the reflection was within water, i used the liquify tool to recreate the look of the ripples in the water on the lower half of the photograph. This meant that the scene was mirrored in the water, and in the end result, the effect of the water ripples was reflected in the rest of the photograph due to the editing.
In addition to this, when exploring image manipulation, i created images which looked as though a person was trapped within a glass bottle. in order to do this, I first took several photographs of a person, i used Natalie as my model, within the studio, i then took a photograph of a glass bottle using the light box. then in photoshop, I used the lasso tool to cut natalie out so there was no background to the image and then dropped the image of Natalie onto the image of the bottle which i took. i repositioned and resized the image of Natalie so she was exactly where i wanted her within my image and then i changed the opacity of this layer so it looks as though she was actually inside the bottle rather than placed infront of the bottle. Once I had created these images of Natalie, I showed a friend of mine the images which I had created and he said to me "How did you do that? could you trap me in a bottle?" so i did, as a last minute edit, I found a full length photograph of my friend Nathan and edited him inside a bottle in the same way i had done before. I included this image into my visual diary as it added some variation however, the photograph of Nathan was not taken by myself but the photograph of the bottle which he was edited into was, and the editing was all my own. i enjoyed manipulating these images in this way as it gave a fun and interesting outcome and this was something i was not aware of how to do before completing this task.
overall I enjoyed this project as i was able to learn about how to effectively take photographs of glass without an unwanted glare or something to that effect. This can be seen as my images of glass greatly improve from my primary research task which was mainly photographs of windows to the photographs of people in bottles. i found the image manipulation portion of this project extremely interesting and fun as i enjoyed creating imagery then turning the imagery into an art piece and playing around with photoshop is a fun passtime for me and the more i know in this area, the better in my opinion. This said, one area which i feel i could imporve in is time management as i ended up stressing about not getting everything completed in time for the deadline. i will try to improve this with the next project which i complete.

Final Evaluation

Throughout this project I aimed top capture the essence of location within photograph and I did this through creating a series of album covers. Each task I was asked to complete was either centred around the three decades the 60’s 70’s and 80s or the idea of location within photography. This meant that I was able to explore these three decades and also explore location photography further.

This project made me look into existing album cpovers so I was able to recreate me own with an understanding of what they were like and how they looked. I had complete control over how the album covers looked and which albums I chose to interperate as long as they were from the 60s 70s or 80s. I enjoyed the fact that I had this freedom as it meant that  I was able to study albums which I grew up listening to as my dad would play them when I was younger.

This project stressed the importance of lighting and location within photography and how effective it can be. In addition to this this project also taught me how important portrait photography can be and this was quite new to me as I had not explored that far into portrait photography before starting this project.

I feel that one way in which I could improve with my next project would be to improve my time management as I struggled with how much time I had left towards the end of the project. This is something I can overcome with my next project.

Overall I feel that this project was successful and I very much enjoyed the topic of recreating a;lbum covers.

Final Album Covers

After I had completed all of my research and all of my planning for my final shoots, it was time to carry out and complete the shoots and also time to create my final album covers.
Here are the contact sheets for the photoshoots which I carried out in order to get my final images.

Final Album Covers:

This is the first of my final album covers which I created and it is for the 1964 album I Walk The Line which was released by Johnny Cash. The idea behind the image I used within this album cover was to go on to the tram lines at Shipley glen and get a photograph of my own feet as I literally walked down the tramline. I felt that this idea was a simple and literal interpretation of the title of the album. I like the idea behind this imagery as it is very different to the original album artwork as this has a lot more bright colours whereas the original artwork was very dark and predominantly black in colour. This photograph shows my red and white polka dot shoe on the wire which runs down the centre of the tram way giving a literal meaning to “I walk the line” as it looks as though I was literally walking along the line. This photograph shows a contrast between my red shoe and the brown autumn leaves which I feel adds a nice pop of colour to the image. this photograph fits into the category of location photography as it was taken while I was out and about. This also means that the lighting within this photograph was provided by natural lighting as I did not have access to any alternative lighting sources and the photograph was taken mid afternoon while it was still light enough outside. When adding typography to this album cover, I chose to use two main colours, navy blue and white, and double them up so both colours can be seen through each other. For the album title, I made the white layer more prominent whereas for the artists name, I made the navy blue layer of text more prominent, I did this in order to differentiate between the two different pieces of text. When choosing the type of text I wanted, I wanted something which was bold and would stand out as the background that the text was going on was quite busy and the text needed to be bold in order to be able to stand out enough so you can read it. In addition to this, I chose to put the title at different height because I wanted it to symbolise steps in a way. First you come to the artists name, then with the next step you get to the album title. Overall I am very happy with the way this album cover has turned out.

This is the second album cover which I created and it is for the 1972 album Slayed? By Slade. This album cover shows a tram on Shipley glen tram way. The idea behind this photograph was that one of the tracks on the original album was titled “how d’ya ride” so I thought that by taking a photograph of a tram which you literally ride on, it would be a literal answer to the question within the track title. As the cover for this album is related to one of the tracks on the album this means that the imagery is not linked to the original art work or the title of the album itself and it is completely different to the original art work. This photograph simply shows a red tram on the tram lines while it is not in use with trees surrounding the tram. When editing this photograph, I changed the levels in order to make the trees appear darker and the tram appear brighter in order to make the tram more eye catching and appealing to look at. This photograph was taken using only natural lighting as it was taken while I was out and about and I did not have access to any alternative lighting and it was still light enough at the time of taking the photograph to not have to use any other lighting. When adding text to this album cover, I wanted to keep it simple and keep the majority of the focus on the imagery. This means that I used a simple italic font and kept the artist name and the album title in the bottom right of the image so that it is still visible, yet out of the way. Overall I am very happy with the way this album cover turned out.

This is the third and final album cover which I created and it is for the 1984 album Reckless by Bryan Adams. This album cover shows my dog running towards me while I took photographs of him. This image is not linked to the original album artwork or the title of the album and it is completely different to the original artwork for the album.  The idea behind the image for this album cover was that one of the tracks on the original album is titled ‘Run to you’ so I felt that the title of this song was represented well with an image of my dog running towards me. The lighting within this photograph is 100% natural lighting as the photograph was taken mid afternoon while it was still light enough not to need alternative lighting sources. The location of this photograph was on baildon moors while I was taking my dogs for a walk. When editing this photograph, I took three photographs of my dogs from the same shoot and layered them on top of each other to make it look as though there are multiple copies of my dog, Timmy. This meant however that the entire image blurred slightly as I had layered images over one and other which did not join up exactly. When adding text to this I wanted it to stand out so in order to do this I used a block text and layered two different colours together so it would stand out more. When placing the text I made it so the album title and the artists name were on opposing corners of the image. overall I am very happy with the way this album cover turned out

photoshoot planning

location portrait photography

For this task I was asked to explore portrait photography. Within this task I was asked to create a selection of photographs taken on location featuring portraits of people within my photographs. Here are the photographs which I created while carrying out this task.

Heres a closer look at some of my favourite photographs from this task
.
This is one of the photographs I took while exploring location portrait photography. This is a photograph of Natalie’s profile as she is looking off towards the left of the photograph. The location of this photograph was within the new Broadway centre in Bradford. I chose to use this location as it is somewhere new to photograph and it had the potential to bring fresh content to my work. The lighting within this photograph was provided by the artificial lighting within the store as we were inside and no natural light was able to get into where I was shooting so this was not available for me to use at this time. Once I had taken this photograph, I put it into photoshop and edited the levels slightly in order to make the red of Natalie’s hair as vibrant as I could and make it stand out. After I had done this, I used the colour pop technique in order to make the background of the image greyscale while Natalie remains in colour. I like this technique as it draws the viewers attention to the subject, which in this case, is Natalie.

This is another of the photographs I took while exploring location portrait photography. This is a photograph of a man I bumped into while I was walking around the new Broadway centre in Bradford. When looking for people to take photographs of, I saw this man and thought he looked interesting and after speaking to him briefly, I found out that the pin badged located on his hat are badges which he has collected as a hobby and the feathers in his hat are from when he has been out and found feathers that he liked. This photograph shows the mans profile and shows off a selection of the badges on his hat. The lighting within this image was provided by a mixture of natural lighting and artificial lighting as natural lighting was let in from windows but there was also artificial lighting as I was inside the Broadway centre at the time. Once I had taken this photograph, I put it into photoshop and edited the levels slightly in order to make the colours within this imagea little more eye catching.

This is another photograph I took while exploring location portrait photography. This is a photograph of Tom facing to the left of the photograph but looking towards the camera. The location of this photograph is a hotel where we stayed over night. I photographed in this location as I wanted to get some portrait shots however the weather meant that shooting outside would have been hard as it was raining heavily. The lighting in this photograph was provided by artificial lightings provided by the lights in the room as this was the only lighting available to me at this time as it was late in the evening so there was no natural lighting available for me to use. Once I had taken this photograph, I put it into photoshop in order to edit the levels slightly.

This is another photograph which I took while exploring location portrait photography. This is a photograph of Jamie stood in Leeds city centre. This photograph features my friend standing to the right of the image looking directly towards the camera with Leeds city centre in the back ground. I chose this location for this photograph as I was already in Leeds for a different reason and thought it would be the perfect opportunity to include locations which are outside of Bradford in my work. The lighting for this photograph is provided by artificial light sources such as street lights and car headlights as I shot this photograph within the evening meaning it was dark and there was no natural light available for me to use. Once I had taken this photograph, I put it into photoshop and edited the levels slightly in order to make the lighter parts of the image stand out more.
This is another photograph which I took while exploring location portrait photography. This is a photograph of a man who actually stopped me in Leeds city centre while I was taking other photographs and asked me “do you want to take my photograph?” In response to this question, I said yes as I thought it would be perfect to fit into this section of my project. The location of this photograph is Leeds city centre by the train station as this was where the man stopped me and asked for me to take his photograph.  The lighting for this photograph was provided by artificial lighting such as the light from street lamps as this photograph was taken in the evening so therewas no natural lighting available for me to take advantage of. In addition to the amount of light I had available at this time, I also chose to use the flash on my camera. Once I had taken this photograph, I out it into photoshop and edited the levels slightly in order to make the man stand out from the dark background slightly more than he already did.

Original albums

For this task I was asked to choose the three albums which I will be recreating and research them. During this task I researched a lot about each album including the track listing, the year it was released, the title and artist of the album and I have also given an evaluation of each of the album covers. The three albums which I chose to recreate are “I walk the line” by Johnny Cash, “Slayed?” by Slade and “Reckless” by Bryan Adams.  Each of these albums are from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s respectively.

I Walk The Line: Johnny Cash – 1964

Track listing:

11.        I walk The Line
22.       Bad News
33.       Folsom Prison Blues
44.       Give My Love To Rose
55.       Hey Porter
66.       I Still Miss Someone
77.       Understand Your Man
88.       Wreck Of The Old ‘97
99.       Still In Town
110.   Big River
111.   Goodbye Little Darlin’ Goodbye
112.   Troublesome Waters

I walk the line is the nineteenth studio album by Johnny Cash and it was released in May 1964. The original album artwork shows Johnny Cash wearing a black suit against a dark background stood at a microphone with a guitar in his arms. This means that it looks as though this photograph was taken during a performance. This is also made apparent by the lighting which is used within the photograph used here. This photograph has been lit using artificial lighting which has been directed onto the front of Johnny Cash which is made apparent by how well his face is lit yet how dark the surrounding parts of the photograph are. As Johnny Cash was known as ‘The Man In Black’ this album cover is very fitting as it shows cash wearing an all black suit as he was often seen wearing which soon became his signature look hence being given the nick name “the man in black”. Aside from the photograph which makes up the majority of this album this album cover also includes the artists name “Johnny Cash” and the title of the album “I Walk The Line” and in addition to this, a track listing is also featured on the front of the album cover. I feel that this is a very effective album cover as it is very informative and you know as soon as you pick it up what you are getting, the iconic photograph is very typical of Johnny Cash also. The photograph used for this album cover was produced by the photographer Lee Friedlander.

Slayed?:  Slade - (1972)

Track listing:
1: How D'ya Ride
2: The Whole World's Goin' Crazee
3: Look At Last Nite
4: I Won't Let It 'Appen Again
5: Move Over
6: Gudbuy T'Jane
7: Gudbuy Gudbuy
8: Mama Weer All Crazee Now
9: I Don' Mind
10: Let The Good Times Roll

Slayed is the third studio album by the British rock band Slade. Slayed was released November 1st 1972 and reached number 1 in the UK album charts and it lasted for a total of 34 weeks in the charts. This album featured two of the band biggest hits Gudbuy T'Jane and Mama Weer All Crazee Now and it has been said by rock critics to be the greatest studio album which Slade ever released. This album was also included within the book titled "1001 albums to listen to before you die". The original artwork for this album features a photograph of the four piece band stood together with the band name written across their knuckles with the album name displayed at the bottom of the album in bold yellow text. Within this photograph, the band are shown wearing typical glam rock clothing which they were known for as this was the style at this time. The era in which this albumm was released is also made evident from the hair styles which the band have as the long hair on males was fashionable within the 1970's. the original artwork for this album cover was produced by the photographer Gered Mankowitz.

Reckless - Bryan Adams (1984)

Track Listing:
1: One Night Love Affair
2: She's Only Happy When She's Dancin'
3: Run To You
4: Heaven
5: Somebody
6 :Summer Of 69
7: Kids Wanna Rock
8: Its Only Love
9: Long Gone
10: Ain't Gonna Cry

Reckless is the fourth studio album which was released by the Canadian singer/song writer Bryan Adams. reckless was released on November 5th 1984 and the release of this album coincided with Adams' 25th birthday. This was one of Adams' most successful studio albums with 6 of the tracks being released as singles. The singles which were released from this album are 'one night love affair' 'run to you' 'somebody' 'heaven' 'summer of 69' and 'its only love' with 'summer of 69' being one of his most recognisable songs not only from this album, but of all time. Unfortunately I was not able to find out who took the photograph for the original artwork. The original artwork for this album features a black and white image of Bryan Adams with a serious yet "i dont care", or reckless expression on his face which fits in with the title of the album. The typography used within this album cover is simple yet effective as the artist name and the album title are clearly displayed within the cover while it is also out of the way and does not distract from the imagery used. The typography used here acts as a boarder for the image in a way.

Landscape photographs

For this task I was asked to explore landscape photography. Within this task I was asked to produce a range of different landscape photographs including rural scenes, city scenes and also night scenes. By covering each of these aspects it means that I have covered the basic shooting locations and conditions for photographing while out and about on location. Here are the photographs I took during this task.

Heres a closer look at some of my favourite photographs from this task.

This is one of the photographs I took while exploring landscape photography. This is a photograph of the yellow light which can be found located next to road crossings. I took this photograph towards the end of the afternoon and at this time of the year, this means that the light had started to drop slightly making the sky a  little dark. I feel that this adds a nice effect to the photograph as the dark clouds contrast with the yellow from the light. The location of this photograph was in baildon village at the crossing and I felt that this would be a good photograph to include for the city landscape images. The lighting within this photograph was provided solely by natural light and I did not use any additional lighting or reflectors in order to create this image. Once I had taken this image I put it into photoshop in order to edit the levels slightly in order to make the yellow of the light pop more. In addition to this, I also cropped the image square so it would be appropriate for an album cover.

This is another one of the photographs which I took while exploring location photography. This is a photograph of trains at Leeds train station taken from beyond the wall, outside of the train station itself. I took this photograph at around 7 in the evening, meaning at this time of year, it was fully dark at this time. With this in mid I thought it would make a good photograph to fit in with the night time location photographs which I was required to take. The location for this photograph was leeds city centre right by the train station and the lighting within this photograph was provided by artificial lighting given off by street lights as it was night time and there was not any natural lighting available for me to use. Once I had taken this photograph I put it into photoshop  and edited the levels slightly in order to try and improve the photograph and I also cropped the image into a square format so it is more appropriate for an album cover.

This is another one of the photographs which I took while exploring location photography. This is a photograph of the outside area near Leeds train station. I took this photograph at the same time as the previous one so the lighting conditions remained the same as within the previous photograph meaning that the lighting within this photograph was provided by artificial lighting given off from street lights as there was no natural lighting available for me to work with. I used this photograph as one of my night time location images. once I had taken this photograph I put it into photoshop  and edited the levels slightly in order to try and improve the photograph and I also cropped the image into a square format so it is more appropriate for an album cover.

This is another of the photographs which I took while exploring landscape photography. This is a photograph a tree losing it’s leaves for winter. This photographs shows a silhouette of the tree against the white background of the cloud filled sky. The location of this photograph is on Shipley glen meaning its perfect for a rural landscape photograph. The lighting for this photograph was provided by only natural lighting as it was during the day and I did not use any additional artificial lighting to light the photograph. Once I had taken this photograph I put it into photoshop and edited the levels slightly in order to darken the tree and increase the contrast between the tree and the sky so the silhouette effect is more prominent within the photograph. In addition to this, I also cropped this image square so it would be more appropriate as an album cover.

This is another of the photographs which I took while exploring landscape photography. This is a photograph of a small waterfall which I found within a stream. The location of this photograph was somewhere within Shipley glen as this is where a chose to take a lot of photographs. When taking this photograph, I used a slow enough shutter speed in order to capture the movement of the waterfall and it falls into the lower part of the stream. I think that this is a nice look for the photograph as it captures the movement very nicely. The lighting for this photograph was provided by only natural lighting and I did not use any additional artificial lighting in order to light this shot. Once I had taken this photograph, I put it into photoshop and altered the levels slightly in order to make the colours pop a little more and I also cropped this image into a square format so it would be more appropriate as an album cover.
